weekday recap in iphone pics. (featuring papa!)

This week Kale fell more in love with his toothbrush, had an unfortunate meeting with the cat's claws, and then showed Bubbie how much his feelings were hurt by feeding him yogurt.

After three weeks of being a full-time SAHD, it was time for Kris to start his new life as part-time SAHD and part-time worker. This meant a frantic Monday morning as we both tried to get ourselves ready for the day, while Kale eyed up Kris's new toothbrush.
This week also meant Kale got two full days of hanging out with his Nana while Kris worked and I locked myself in our home office and got down to business.
Kale's Papa came by at the end of the day, Kris jammed on the xylaphone, and it was a party.
Kale crashed about 0.4 seconds after everyone left.

Tuesday was day 2 of both Kris and I working. We thought about letting Lucy the singing dog watch Kale for the day, but luckily Nana came back.
Kris and Kale show me how they really feel about getting out of bed.
The best part about working from home is being able to take breaks, crawl into bed, and nurse Kale. It beats hanging out at the water cooler any day.
Wednesday. Date night. The night Kris doesn't go to the gym and we watch Modern Family while Kale snores beside us. That's how romantic it gets around here.

The top left picture is my favourite of the week. I'm nursing Kale before I leave for work while he keeps a tight grip on his toothbrush.
On Friday I left work a little early and we went to the mall to search for cheap summer clothes for Kale for our trip to Cuba. Anything we buy now won't fit him when it's actually summer here, so we're basically buying clothes for one week. Hence, the need for them to be cheap. Luckily Old Navy had some deals. They also had this St. Patrick's day headband that Kale clearly loved wearing.
Kris donated blood. It was his third time. He got a sticker. He made me take a picture for the blog.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND - PAPA'S PERSPECTIVE!

Here are the photo's Kris took this week with his own little commentary.

This week was kinda crummy for me. I suppose crummy isn't the right word, but in terms of the ammount of time I got to spend with Kale compared to previous weeks - crummy it was! I worked Monday and Tuesday, Randalin took him to music class Wednesday morning, and Thursday I had to go get our passports sorted out. So it took until Friday before we could get a full day and back into our routine of being totally awesome!

1)Kale looks crazy here, but thats alright because we were totally rocking out before i took the picture. Explosions in the Sky was pumping on CFRU, and we would take turns playing the xylaphone and tamborine while did his little head bang. When the song ended and we were both just sitting there giggling, I thought to myself "That was the single coolest thing that I have ever experienced in my entire life." Im pretty sure Kale felt the same.

2) After rocking and rolling we ate some breakfast. Kale wanted to try the spoon for himself, and since he'd feasted pretty heavy on the yogurt I let him. Sure enough, he just wanted to feed the cat. But it was cool. In the picture you can see all of his favorite things. The radio, the cat, food, and his toothbrush!

3) Despite feeding him all the yogurt possible, the cat still laid down the law on Kale. I didnt think Randalin would seriously let me put this up on the internet. The cat gave Kale three smacks in the face when he got to close to the curtains (Bubbie is an indoor cat, and watches the neighborhood cats from the window thinking he's tough) Kale cried for a few seconds, but he was fine. He's more peeved than anything that I'm holding his head still to take the picture, as the 3000 other attempts lead to the standard photo of Kale, BLURRY! I always knew the two of them would rough it out, but man. Kale doesn't wrap his head around it, and the cat doesnt wrap HIS head around it, so they just get themselves into situations where someone is going to get their face smacked. I've been using my slippers to keep the cat in line, but its only a matter of time before Kale gets his revenge.

4) Thats my hat. Look at Kales hair! HA! Staying home is about 1 billion times better than anything else. This week promises to be a good one, with Daddy and Me drop in Monday, potentially only one day of work, AND no need to drive a 1.5 hour round trip in the morning for no good reason! Its going to be a fantastic week!

preparing for cuba.

Kris and I are counting down the days until our trip to Cuba. In fact, Emily has a countdown ticker on her blog and I check it at least three times a day. I cannot wait to spend time with some of my oldest and best friends, see two of the most amazing people in the whole world get married, and introduce Kale to a country I LOVE. Oh, and the sun? BAH! Cannot wait.

I've never done a flashback Friday post before, but thinking about Cuba has me thinking about my previous trips there and how different they were compared to what we're going to experience this time. Because in the past, Cuba has meant random dinners in strangers houses, spending the day touring cities with illegal guides, and alcohol. Lots and lots of alcohol.

Circa 2007. Kris and I on the way to our hotel. I'm sure we're already several cocktails into it.

One week later. Notice a difference in our complexion?

I might not be able to drink as much this time around - but I can still get a tan.

wordless wednesday.

I've totally cheating some kind of unwritten blog rule here and using the same photo for my Wordless Wednesday post as I did for my 365 blog.
But seriously - can you blame me? LOOK AT THAT FACE!

manic monday.

Today was another first for our family - the first day Kris and I BOTH had to go to work and let someone else watch Kale. Luckily I was working from home. I say luckily because I'm insane and still not ready to leave Kale with someone other than his dad for more than 3 minutes. Yeah, I'm that mom.

After two terrible nights of sleep, Kale slept like an angel last night. Which in my world means that he only woke every 2 hours, nursed, and went right back to sleep. Basically it was the best sleep ever. Anyway, I'm just mentioning this because for the first time in weeks Kale actually slept in until 7am (opposed to his preferred waking time of 6am), which meant that we both had to scramble to get ready in time.

Here's Kris trying to brush his teeth with Kale eyeing up his toothbrush.
Kid is OBSESSED with toothbrushes.

Kris's mom, (Nana if you're Kale), was going to head over at 8:30am to start watching Kale for the day except her car wouldn't start! That's because it was -20C (without the windchill). INSANE. Luckily Kris was working close by and went to pick her up and bring her over. Kale was pretty excited to have a full day with his Nana and even more excited when he saw she brought xylophone. Party time.

Here's Kale working on his beats.
While Kale and Nana worked on a few tune's for their rock band, I had to tear myself away and plant my behind at my desk. Kris painted the office for me a couple months ago so I could have a nice, serene work space, but I've done little else with the space. *sigh* One day I'll get to that...

Wait, does the peacock count as decor?
I like working at home because I get to take breaks and hang out with Kale, rather than with my coworkers at the water cooler. I mean, I like my co-workers, but seriously - nursing my baby boy in bed is about 8000 times better.

I actually look at peace in the middle of my work day. It's a miracle.
Kris's dad (OJ - Opa Junior, if you're Kale) came by at the end of the day to pick up Nana and at about the same time I wrapped up my work day and Kris came walking in the door. Kale got a bit overwhelmed and had a five second meltdown. Then Kris played him a song on the xylophone and all was well again.

Kris has mad skills on xylophone.

When everyone left, Kale immediately did this:

This was pretty much perfect timing since it gave the boys some time to cuddle and me some time to get dinner ready. Tonight we had roasted red pepper & zucchini on foccacia bread with goat cheese and pesto and these amazing sweet potato fries with lime dip.Seriously people - if you need to kick up your sweet potato fries I highly recommend this recipe. HIGHLY. I could have eaten them all, but Kris and Kale made me share.

Nom.Nom.Nom.

Kale's enjoyed dinner too, and let me know by pointing at me. Ok, so he points at everyone. Well, everything. Little man cannot stop pointing.

After we got Kale bathed, we let him run around naked for awhile. When I say "run around" I mean it. Well, technically he scuttles around. But SO FAST. He can make it from the living room to the toilet in about 0.6 seconds. The toilet is some kind of magnet to his pointing finger. They're connected in ways I'll never understand.

At this point I clearly deserved a treat and so I sent Kris to the store for a healthy snack.

What? Chocolate isn't healthy?

weekday recap in iphone pics. (featuring papa!)

Kale was a lot of fun this week, doing all kinds of hilarious things. He became best friends with a toothbrush, refused to wear clothes 99.9% of the time, and began uncontrollably pointing at, well, EVERYTHING.

Mamas pictures

Monday morning I decided to walk to my meeting downtown so that Kris and Kale could have the car. Plus, I've been struggling with fitting exercise into my new life as a working mom, so figured the walk would do me some good. The walk downtown is about 30 minutes from our house, so I got up a little early, downloaded the latest Democracy Now! podcast, and was ready to hit the pavement. Just as I was leaving Kale had a MAJOR poop explosion. I couldn't tell who had more poop on them - Kris or Kale. I couldn't leave them hanging, so I dropped my stuff and helped strip down Kale and get him in the tub to clean off (those are his poop covered pj's hanging over the edge of the tub in the second picture). Attempt #2 and I was out the door only to be greeted by a beautiful sunny day of -20 (-6 you Americans!). Of course I picked one of the coldest days of the year to walk.... Anyway, it was a nice walk and when I got stuck waiting for this train to cross I was totally taken aback by the beauty of the day and the silence (yes, the train was loud - but nothing compared to the noise Kale can unleash).

On Tuesday Kris's mom invited us over for dinner and I was so thankful because I did NOT feel like cooking. I somehow forgot to take a single photo - oops! I really should have snapped some at dinner because it was the first time that Kale ate kale.
Wednesday was a work from home day and so I get to spy on Kris and Kale all day doing cute things like napping and reading books together.
Thursday was another work from home day and I'd run out of excuses not to go to the gym. I had full intentions of going at 6:30am, but the fact that I made it for 7:30am still kind of amazes me. I did some cardio and then hit up the light weights and exercise ball. I'm not going to admit how much my muscles hurt the next day.
The bottom two photo's are of Kale waking up and Kale eating. Apparently both things illicit the same expression.

TGIF.
Friday was a good work day because the office was quiet and I managed to get a lot done. I came home at lunch and nursed Kale right away and he immediately fell asleep so we didn't get much of a lunch visit. I went back to work and celebrated the end of the week with a coffee and a blondie brownie. What? I went to the gym on Thursday!
Kale was pretty happy to have me home at the end of the day. That and he likes seeing himself on the camera.

When I come home at the end of the day I demand a play-by-play of the entire day from Kris. Seriouslyy - I don't know how he puts up with me. I want to know how much milk Kale had, what he ate, how many poops he took, how long he slept for, who came over, where they went, what they did - basically everything. If he could tell me the number of breaths Kale took from the time I left to the time I came home, I'd want to know that too. Anyway, I'm really glad that Kris is participating in these weekday updates because he takes great photo's and I get to see little snippets of their time together, along with you guys. So, without further ado - here are papa's pictures, with papa's commentary

Papas pictures

(1)This is Kale going ape on the curtain! Sometimes the cat sits on the windowsill and Kale sits as close as he can to the wall and just flails, shakes and hollers at the cat. Its hilarious to watch and it seems to keep him very entertained. It is normally followed by the cat jumping down and running for dear life to get away from the crazy kid!
(2)This was Kale waking up from a nap. I don't think there are many things better than a nap wake up (unless I am napping with him, then there aren't many things worse) he just sits there looking all dopey and confused. Its like everything he sees is brand new and hes super happy to be awake! AWESOME!
(3) Kale and I went to the early years center on Monday for a hang out. We had fun and will be returning every week! (except this week, I'm working like a sucker) I had never been to any classes with Kale, so it was a learning experience for us both! We had a ton of fun, so much so that I  forgot to take any pictures and remembering that as we left, took a picture of the sign....lame.
(4) Kale loves to be naked. Everything is 100x funnier when he is.
(5)Here is an example of Kale's out of control hands pointing. He was just zipping around following the cat from room to room, then he came around the corner and saw the kitchen light. I changed 2 light bulbs while he watched and i think this may have been the catalyst for the point-o-rama our house has become!
(7) Kale has been eyeing up my toothbrush since day one of my paternity leave. I would sit him on the floor and sit beside him while I brushed my teeth, and Ithen let him hold onto it and check it out. He gradually took it over and in this case, wouldn't put it down as he was falling asleep. Every time I tried he'd wake up and freak, so I let him nap with it. I had to keep a close eye on him so he didnt flail and knock any eyeballs out!

new videos.

My mom put in a special request for new video's and so I spent a good chunk of my free time tonight uploading to YouTube. I have a feeling that even if you're not Kale's grandma, you'll still enjoy these.

In the short two weeks that Kale has been crawling he has mastered The Scuttle. The Scuttle is Kale's prefered mode of getting around these days and he can do it FAST. Even though Kale can crawl on all fours, The Scuttle works much better on the hardwood floors.

Once he mastered The Scuttle, he decided that he wanted to walk. It took him about two days to figure out how to go from drunken sailor stumbles to marching down the hall (holding us for support, of course).

My parents got Kale this dog that sings a terrible mash up of 'Shout!' and 'Merry Christmas.' It's pure awfulness. Except Kale loves it and so we listen to it EVERY.SINGLE.MORNING. Watching Kale headbang to a signing dog is totally worth putting up with the terrible song.

And finally - Kale learned how to play peek-a-boo during the holidays and thinks he's pretty hysterical, hiding behind whatever he can find.

flying zucchini.

Kale likes to tell us he's finished eating by throwing his food on the floor.
I narrowly escaped a flying zucchini taking this photo.

i heart my blogger friends.

I started this blog in the second half of my pregnancy. I wanted to start it earlier, but we were kind of slow in getting the news out to some people and I didn't want them to find out we were expecting on the internet! At first it was a good way for me to share my excitement with friends and family and then when Kale was born, it became more about documenting our new life for him. A glorified baby book, if you will.

I hope Al Gore doesn't mind sharing his internet with people when Kale is old enough to read all this.

This blog has also been a great way to share photo's and stories with my family, who don't see Kale as much as they would like to. I guess what I'm saying is that this blog was never really meant to be for me. So it's kind of amazing to see what it's become.

It's taken me awhile to find a place that I'm comfortable with in the blogging community. There is a lot of competition - number of readers, sponsors, giveaways - all of those things seem to count. Some blogs are so drop dead gorgeous that I'm convinced they have staff helping them make posts. And the photo's?! Where do they find the time to set up the shot and later edit it to perfection? It boggles my mind.

Completely and utterly BOGGLES it.

I've gained a small handful of loyal readers - mostly other mom bloggers with babies around the same age. It's been fun to watch their kids grow up, share stories, and get advice. Some of these people I truly consider to be my friends and I feel so lucky to have found them and built a connection.

Since I've gone back to work, this is true X 1000. People say that being a stay-at-home mom is isolating, but now that I've had a bit of a taste of both worlds - I find being a working mom far more isolating. Sure, I get to have adult conversations all day and mix and mingle and gossip about last night's episode of Glee. Sure, people ask about my baby and I smile bravely and say "no, he's not sleeping through the night yet" (because this is all anyone wants to know). But the baby and mama classes? They all happen when I'm at work. The majority of mom's with babies Kale's age are taking the full year maternity leave they are entitled to, rather than splitting it with their partner. So while they're having play dates, I'm facilitating strategic planning sessions, and when I want to hang with the mama's and babies, they're nestled in for the night and hanging out with their family all weekend. So yeah, it's isolating.

That's why I'm so thankful for this blog and the friendships its inadvertently created. And while blogging is a priority, it comes behind spending my limited free time with my family and so I can't post as much as I used to. I'm crossing my fingers that my readers - my friends - will keep coming back. I try my hardest to comment on all the blogs I read because I know how important it is to know people are reading. So if I don't comment for awhile - you haven't lost me! Just please don't lose me either.

weekday recap in iphone pics. (featuring papa!)

Monday marked my second week back to work and I'm slowly starting to get into the groove of things. I'm so thankful that I work close to home and can come home on my lunch break. When I'm at work it's all fengugreek and lots of fluids to try and keep my supply up. It's been really interesting to see how my home life and work life intertwine now.
That night we had artichoke and turkey stuffed pasta for dinner and since so many people asked for the recipe, I've linked to it here. FYI - I used regular jarred tomato sauce rather than making arrabbiata sauce from scratch and it was still super yummy.

Tuesday was another delicious dinner - thanks to Kris! Kris isn't much of a cook so he was pretty excited about this chilli. Before we could eat he demanded I take a picture for the blog.

Wednesday I worked from home, which is a nice treat for me because I can nurse Kale to sleep for his naps and steal some extra cuddles. It's not the best treat for Kris though since I seem to throw their schedule off when I'm around.
Kris normally goes to the gym after Kale and I go to the sleep for the night, but he stuck around Wednesday night, we drank some wine and held hands during Modern Family. This counts as a special night around here these days.

Thursday was another work from home day so I got to spend a few extra minutes in bed in the morning. There is a shot of my work space at home. It's a disaster.
Thursday night I had to go into the office to do some printing and then pick up some snacks for a Friday morning meeting. I was super unimpressed to be going out in the cold at 8pm. I was even more unimpressed when I got to work and discovered that while I was working from home, someone was raiding my chocolate bowl at the office!
Friday morning I had a meeting at City Hall, which led to me pumping in some strange places.
I ended the work week by 2pm and came home to find Kale with his new favourite toy - papa's toothbrush.
I was soooo tired last night. Apparnetly Kale was too.

Papa's persepective was pretty popular last week, so I've asked Kris to share some pics he took this week and provide his commentary again!

On the left we have Kale playing with two of his many balls. He loves to chase after them and, when he can, pick them up. For his entertainment I hauled an exrta ball out of the soccer bag and let him hussle around the house after it.It seems like more often than not, Randalin is hollaring "no balls in the house!" as we play. The cat chases them (awesome) Kale chases them (awesome) Who wouldn't want balls in the house?!?!

I like to watch Kale eat.

And, in the final shot, hes riding around in the sling, munching on my former toothbrush (it was in active duty till he caught sight of it). When Randalin isn't home and Kale and I are running our routine, we can normally get 2 hours of entertainment followed by a third hour where Kale is harder to entertain and slowly drifting towards miserable. When he starts to get sassy, I put him into the sling and do chores. He loves watching and touching things and forgets he's due for a nap! More often than not he falls asleep in the sling, which is awesome, but once he's down theres no moving him elsewhere, which means i browse the internet with a sweaty sleepy baby strapped to my chest trying not to wake him up.

working.pumping.working.

I'm not sure I've ever been so happy for a Friday. Being a working mom is, well, WORK. I'm still trying to figure out how to combine my new life with my old job and find a balance between home and work. I'm sure that this is something I will be trying to do until the day I retire. The biggest challenge for me so far? Finding the time and space to pump. When I'm at the office, it's not a big deal since I have a private office and can just lock the door and put up my "please do not disturb" sign. I wanted it to read "if the pump's a rockin', don't come a knockin'," but I have some co-workers that might not find the humour in that. The problem is, 80% of my job is being in meetings (I know, totally ridiculous). When the meetings are at my office, I have to figure out a way to excuse myself for ten minutes without disrupting everyone else. When the meetings are outside of my office (probably 50% of them), it's a whole other story.

Let me share such a story with you. Every other month I have one BIG meeting, that includes government officials and executive directors from various agencies. Despite the fact that everyone is really nice, I still get a bit overwhelmed with the fact that I'm sitting at the table with some of my city's most powerful people. I play a pretty big role in organizing these meetings, so once a month I'm usually pretty stressed out. I work by butt off this week to prepare and after wrapping up at 8pm last night, I was feeling pretty good about things. Then this morning as I was running around like a mad woman getting ready, the person who was to facilitate a 2 hour portion of the meeting called to say her daughter was sick and she couldn't make it.

Here's the thing. Eight months ago I would have found this super annoying. Now I just totally understand.

So I had about 40 minutes to prepare since yours truly was going to have to fill in.

An hour into the meeting I excuse myself to go pump. I get into the washroom (I normally would never pump in the washroom, but our City Hall is pretty posh and I felt comfortable/clean) only to realize the batteries in my pump are DEAD. So now I have two options. (1) don't pump and risk leaking in front of my member of parliament (and 30 others), or (2) ask a random city employee for a place to pump.

Thankfully the Human Resources office was really helpful and helped me settle into the first aid room and the crisis was diverted. Still - I couldn't help but sit there as a I pumped and wonder how this became my life. After the meeting (which went fine), I pumped in my ward's councillors office.

I have breastfed in ALOT of different places. Now I guess I get to pump in weird places.

I can't decide if that's awesome or not.

wordless(ish) Wednesday.

We'd contemplated cutting Kale's hair a few times, but ultimately decided we'd wait until he was at least a year. That is, until this weekend when we realized he couldn't see where he was crawling....

manic monday.

So apparently being a working mom is EXHAUSTING.

Some people asked what I do for a living. I'm the project coordinator for a poverty reduction initiative in our city & county. The initiative is made up of government representatives, the research community, social service agencies, and people who live in poverty. My position is housed at the United Way in the Social Planning department. My job is all kinds of awesome.

Here's a quick recap of my Manic Monday...

Monday is garbage day around here so while I was running around getting ready for work, the boys were putting out the trash. Kale is currently obsessed with Kris's armpit hair so I'm not sure why Kris does anything shirtless these days.

Here I am, dressed for work, hair done, make up done. Set to go. About two seconds after this photo Kale spit up all over my pants. Awesome.

All three of my boys saying bye!

Here's my stash at work.
Kashi fruit & chocolate bars (yumm), green tea, fengugreek, and lots and lots of water.

I came home to a sad little man who had just taken a tumble, but it didn't take him long to cheer up. He loves seeing himself on my iPhone when I take a picture.

Back at work. I put that bowl of chocolate out for guests but I'm the only one who ends up eating it. As a result, I basically need to refill it everyday.

Sausage & artichoke stuffed pasta for dinner.

Kale enjoyed it.

And wine.
Kris asked me how many bottles to pick up and I asked him how many days there are in a week.
It was that kind of day.

Manic Monday

weekday recap in iphone pics. (featuring papa!)

This week was pretty much a blur and now that I'm looking at my iPhone's pics on my computer, I can't even remember what happened on what day - everything just kind of melts together. I went back to work on Monday, and so my weekday recaps probably won't be as exciting as they used to be (unless you want me to document my work day, which I highly doubt). Gone are the days of lounging in our pj's all day and going on adventures with my little man. Luckily Kris is home during the day with him and he's been snapping a couple of pics to send me at work with his BlackBerry, so I've included them and Kris added his own commentary.

Mamas Pictures:

Here I am before leaving for work. It felt weird to be dressed for the office and not in my pj's at 8am. I was taking a pretty big risk holding Kale at this point because he tends to drool on my clothes and wipe pieces of food he's been hiding all over me. When I come home at lunch I have to immediately take off my shirt and jewlery off before picking him up.

This is my favourite picture of Kale and I from this week. We're chilling in the tub together after being apart all day. Despite the fact that we look like we're relaxed, I was actually mildly freaking out because I was holding my iPhone in WATER and Kale was trying to grab it. The things I do for this blog!

Kris loves being home with Kale, but it's definitely been an adjustment. Kris is used to working a really physical job and so rolling around and playing with blocks is pretty low key for him. I think he was starting to go a little out of his mind the first couple days.

Kale learned to crawl this week and his skills in this department grew at an alarming rate. Crawling is good for one of two thing in Kale's mind - getting to things that he can pull himself up on so he's standing. Here he is eyeing an endtable.

The second thing that Kale uses crawling for is getting to things that he's never touched before. It's as if he's been eyeing this bookcase for eight months and now that he can finally get to it, he makes a beeline for it everytime we're in the living room.

Needless to say, we quickly realized that we need to babyproof NOW. My feelings on babyproofing are mixed. I want Kale to be able to explore and learn and really feel that if there is something out that he shouldn't touch, we should probably just put it away. Obviously there are somethings that need to be secured - cupboard doors, the toilet, etc. Hence, we basically bought out the safety section at Babies R' Us.

This is Kale's latest obsession - a portable radio. We listen to the local University radio station, so there is a pretty good variety on there and Kale seems to love it all. He also loves the light on the front and the antenna (which is covered in rubber so there is no eye poking dangers).

Papas Pictures (featuring Papa commentary!!):

Having been inside for two days, we decided to take a stroll with Kale's sled Tuesday afternoon. He was indifferent to it, and being in the snowsuit made him mad more than anything, but he was staying still, so I used the opportunity to shovel the driveway while he sat watching me.

I'm not sure the quality of this picture really captures the face he was making. I swear he'd have hung himself if I gave him the rope. The second time out, he was all giggles and smiles, but i guess the snowsuit took a bit of getting used to!

Here is Kale mowing down an apple. Watching him eat is one of my favorites. Its a strange combination of total terror that hes going to choke and it will be my fault, and awe at how much he loves it. I normally get to eat at this time too, which is probably another reason I enjoy it so much.

And nap time! We get two of these a day, and they normally last anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. By the end of the week we started taking our naps in bed to try and get him used to that. He passes out, and I use the time to read and study some math. its a pretty decent gig being a stay at home dad! Look at the outfit! Dirty soccer shorts and an old Taekwondo t-shirt, hanging out in bed with the coolest kid ever, listening to the radio and drinking way too much coffee!  Why would I ever want to work again?!?!?
