home tour: where we sleep

Today is the second day of the home tour and the theme is 'where you & your family sleep.' If you missed day one - where you and your family eat - click here! You can also creep take a peek at other people's home tours by visiting Our Journey and you can link up there too and show your own home!
Now here's the thing about sleeping in our house - we don't do it well. We have not slept through the night in 20 months (more for me when I consider how often I was up to pee during my last months of pregnancy). Kale wakes up several times a night to change position, have a drink of water or to snuggle closer to Kris. Each time he wakes, it's for maybe 1 minute - but it's enough to wake me up and keep me up because I have a really hard time falling back to sleep. So - I sleep alone. I know - sad face, right? NO WAY! Ok, maybe a little sad because I really, really, really miss the family bed - but I'm happy that Kris and Kale sleep so well together and then I'm getting a decent sleep. I do sleep with Kale from 5am to 7am when Kris leaves for work, but when I try to sleep with him all night, Kale ends up waking more and I turn into the mama-onster. When Kris tries to sleep with me, I get annoyed at his snoring and Kale wakes more often and can be harder to resettle. Our bedroom is also on a different floor than Kale's and so part of me likes knowing that Kris is there with the little guy, keeping him safe.

Was that a ridiculously long intro? Yes, but 'where we sleep' is a little more complicated in our family than "we sleep here, he sleeps there." Do our sleeping arrangements sound crazy to some people? Sure. Is it what works for us? Yes - which is all that matters.

I won't do a full tour of Kale's room since I've done it on the blog before and you can find it here: Kale's Room. His room is still my favourite room in the whole house and tends to be the space where we spend the most time focused on just being a family. We're not distracted by food or television or laptops. It's just a space for us to be together and I love it.

The only thing in Kale's room that has changed since I did the tour of his room is that he got new pirate bedding for christmas from my parents. Kale things his new blanket is pretty awesome and he felt the need to roll around on it while I took this picture. Kale has had a floor bed since he was 15 months and moved out of our bed. It's worked really, really well for us - but that's a future post!

Our bedroom is quite possibly the best and worst room of the house. Best because it's the largest, has incredible natural light and beautiful floors. Since we live in an old house, there are a lot of small rooms and not a lot of open space. Our bedroom is in the attic and takes up the entire floor. It was really hard to take any pictures that really show the room since there are slanted ceilings and it was impossible for me to get a good angle. To spice it up a bit, Kale decided to strip half his clothes off and smile like a maniac.

Our bedroom is also the worst room in the house because it's so BLAH. We have done absolutely NOTHING with it, but considering I only go up there to sleep (alone), there isn't much point. We've focused on the other rooms in the house and I'm thinking it's time to put some effort into this room soon.

Tomorrow's theme: where you and your family work and play!

  1. ya right, when i read that you sleep alone -- i didn't make a sad face, i made an ENVIOUS face. sounds wonderful!! i'm the same way -- it takes me forever to fall back asleep if something/someone wakes me. sometimes i'll close my eyes and lie there... feeling like i'm asleep -- then i open them to realize so much time has passed and i'm still awake. so frustrating!
i love both the rooms -- including that photo of kale jumping on his bed! is his window shade from ikea? i love it. can you believe we have NO window shades in our whole house? no blinds. no curtains. it's on the list of "things we need ----- eventually"
i'm blabbing. i should stop with these long comments and just email my comments directly to you.
ps. our room is exactly like yours. we've done nothing with it. on one hand it's fresh cause it's so plain. on the other hand it's boring. Hmph.

pps. can i join this house tour tomorrow? maybe do all three posts in one day? my photos are on my hard drive and i'm too lazy right now.

  2. We have not done a thing to our room either! Not one thing on the walls. If we stay another year I'm thinking of painting but we'll see. I know you don't want this, but I kind of feel sad that you have to sleep alone to get good sleep. :( I know you're making the right sacrifice for your family and I'm not judging that at all. I'd just miss sleeping with my hubs so much!

  3. we converted our attic into a master too so I totally get what you mean about sloped ceilings, hard to photograph, etc. Saige sleeps downstairs so we've had a baby monitor on 24/7 ever since she transitioned out of our bed at 9 months.
I love that you're doing this house tour. It sounds like we have similar spaces although ours is in desperate need of a 2012 addition now that we've added a 4th to this 2 bedroom, 1 bath home of ours.
We broke down and bought a bed frame months before Saige came along, but I think I would have preferred to keep our mattress on the floor cause I was always a bit scared she'd roll off of our new sky-high bed and do some serious damage to her baby noggin'.
    oh PS - Kale's bedding is aww-some!
