Montessori Monday: Kale's Floor Bed

Normally I do a montessori-inspired activity for the Montessori Monday link-up, but I thought I would also start sharing some of the ways we have embraced montessori methods and philosophies into our home and daily life.

We enjoyed a family bed from the night Kale was born until we decided to night wean around 15 months. While we followed Dr. Jay Gordon's method for night weaning, which is specifically for families that bedshare, we knew that night weaning in our family involved Kale and I moving to separate beds. We decided to move Kale {and Kris} to a floor bed for a couple reasons:

  • We were not finished co-sleeping. While I had to move out of the family bed to make night weaning a success, Kris was happy to stay with Kale and enjoy all the cuddles. This meant that a crib or a toddler bed was out of the question, so we put our spare double mattress into Kale's room. {If you're interested, here's a post about our night weaning journey}
  • We liked the philosophy behind a floor bed - that kids can be independent and decide when to go to sleep and when to get out of bed. According to Montessori, humans have a natural tendency to explore the environment and learn from it. By allowing the child to experience his environment in this manner, he will be able to understand all of its components and will be comfortable and at ease when alone in his room (from mariamontessori.com)

The transition to the floor bed was pretty seamless. Kale was used to sleeping in a regular bed with Kris and I and we had always kept ours low to the ground. With Kris still there, the only thing to adjust to was not having me there all the time (I still bedshare with Kale when Kris is away and in the morning when he leaves early for work).

Kale only fell out of the floor bed a small handful of times (and slept through most falls). The bed is close enough to the floor that it wasn't a big deal.

In terms of getting out of bed on his own - well it just doesn't happen. When Kale wakes alone in his bed, he will call out for us and stay put until we get there (mostly because he's still half asleep). There have been a few times that I'll be in the shower when Kale wakes up and he's wandered in. We actually wish that he would get himself out of bed, but Kale pretty much always waits for us.

Our entire house is childproofed, so we don't have to worry about him wandering into another room or playing in his room if he did decide to get himself out of bed. In Kale's room there are plenty of books he can reach if he did decide to help himself {here's a link to a tour of Kale's room}. Next to his room is his montessori-inspired playroom. He just needs to figure out that getting out of bed by himself and exploring is ok! I'm assuming that he's used to waking up with one of us in bed with him, so when he wakes up alone, he's confused and so he just stays put and calls for us.

{This is Kale pretending to sleep.}
The floor bed has been great for sleep, but it's also made Kale's room more fun! We all pile on the bed at night to read stories and Kale can jump on and off as he pleases. He loves to run and throw himself on the bed and roll around. We don't have to worry about him falling off or banging his head on anything (besides the wall!). It's also pretty awesome for jumping off:

  1. I wish I had known about floor beds when kidlet was younger. We didn't get a crib for him until he was 7mos old, and we only did that because *I* needed some space from him at night. What ensued was over a year of terrible sleep for me, because he didn't sleep for long stretches and having him in his crib in another room meant that I needed to go to him, and sit in a chair to nurse him back to sleep. Which sometimes took hours. Or I would fall asleep in the chair...

    If I had it to do again, and if we have another child, we will definitely use a floor bed.

  2. I'm looking forward to checking out those links. We have a toddler bed converted from the crib Eli has never used as we also co-sleep. It can then be lengthened when he gets too long for it. I had thought this was a great piece of furniture when I bought it used pre-baby, but we've never used it and I wonder when we will. When the time comes I think Eli would be more comfortable in a futon on the floor as he has napped that way, and because he flips around a lot when he sleeps so I think the narrow crib mattress won't contain his nocturnal rowdiness. We'd lose a few drawers, but would gain a bit of space in the room.  I hadn't known it would be a Montessori issue! I'm always learning something new on your Montessori Mondays!

  3. My in-laws bought us a beautiful crib when I was pregnant and I feel terrible that we've never used it! It can also convert into a toddler bed, but like you, I don't think it could contain Kale's nocturnal rowdiness. I also think that the added (sleep) space of a floor bed makes the transition from co-sleeping to sleeping alone easier because you have the option of making it more gradual.

  4. The floor bed has been so amazing for us because of the same issue - Kale will not sleep long stretches without us and, like you, I needed some space from Kale at night. Luckily my partner is happy to share the floor bed with Kale and we can ALL get some sleep. I know it isn't an ideal arrangement for a lot of people, but it works for us.

  5. I'd love to see more of Kale's room. I've started a website that showcases floor beds and baby-friendly nurseries called Bedstart (bedstart.com)
    to educate and inspire parents to think about the way they plan their children’s spaces. Can we get Kale's room up there?

  7. I'm so glad you shared this!  I'm not ready to night wean yet, but I've been wondering how that would impact our bedsharing arrangement.  I will hold faith that when the time comes, we will find something that works for all of us!

  8. I LOVE floor beds! It's interesting that they can be used in so many different ways. We co-slept when the our kids were babies, so they used their floor bed for naps and as part of their baby space during the day. It's great that you found what works well for your family ... love the photos! Thanks so much for linking up with Montessori Monday. I featured your post at the Living Montessori Now Facebook page and pinned it to my Montessori-Friendly Home Pinterest board at http://pinterest.com/debchitwood/montessori-friendly-home/.

  9. Pre-children Trev & I had a pretty wicked floor bed, but in my pregnant state I thought, "hey we need to grow up and start acting like adults" so we got ourselves a 'real' bed that's not nearly as cool.

    So here I am, once again jealous of Kale's awesomeness.

  13. Hey lady!! I am so glad you posted about this! A lot of people as me about how we were able to transition Logan so early to a bed and I believe that this approach is how it went so smoothly. He has been sleeping on his bed on the floor, and now in a toddler bed, since for a year now and he LOVES the independence he gets from it. I love listening to him play before he puts himself to sleep for a nap.

    PS what photo program do you use for editing??

  14. I use photoshop for editing. And by "editing" I mean I use a bunch of free presets to edit for me. :)

  15. Even though Kale has moved to his own floor bed, I haven't got around to growing up and moving our bed off the floor yet. A bedroom makeover is definitely needed for the grown ups - Kale gets all the cool stuff :)

  16. Dr. Jay Gordon's night weaning method worked really, really well for us. But waiting until everyone was ready is what I believe made the real difference!

  17. Thanks for sharing the book on weaning methods, I will share that with my friend who recently asked for help weaning get daughter from Co sleeping. I had nothing as we never Co slept with my son.
    It's interesting that you say kale doesn't get out of bed in the mornings. My son is exactly the same. We swapped him from a cot to a bed about a fortnight ago and assumed we'd have to deal with lots of night time visits, but he is quite happy, and in the mornings he just lies there singing to himself until we go in to get him up. I have to say I am so relieved
