the family picture

While on vacation, I was committed to capturing at least one decent family picture. This was complicated slightly by the fact that I forgot my charger and had left my camera on overnight - leaving me with a dead camera upon arrival. After listening to me moan and groan about this for about an hour while I googled the closest camera shop, Kris agreed to drive an hour so I could buy a new charger.

The second complication stems for a seeming inability to all look normal at the same time. Kris suffers from the Chandler Syndrome, something that he appears to have passed down to Kale, who continues to smile like a maniac. I, on the other hand, have smiled the same way for the past thirty-something years, which means every.single.picture of me looks exactly the same. Every now and then I try to mix it up - which is never, ever a good idea.

Now, allow me to set the scene....

Kale wakes us at 6am and immediately proceeds to give us a run down of everything he's thought about in the past 24 hours. In an attempt to keep him from waking everyone else in the campsite, we bundle up and head out for a walk. A map points us to an area known as "the lookout" and so I throw my tripod over my shoulder, optimistic that we will capture the perfect family photo.

We arrive. The scene is perfect. I set up. We take a few shots. Kale is interested for about four seconds. To keep his attention, I let him press the remote. Three seconds later, he captures the perfect family photo...

  1. LOVE!!!! I can't decide which I love more though - kris jumping up and down, Kale trying to head for the camera (?) and you trying to maintain order while looking (laughing?) at Kris.

    1. Kale was running directly at the camera hitting the remote over and over and over. I was probably yelling WTF KRIS?!, but we can pretend I'm not a spazz and just say I was laughing.

  5. I certainly think you should frame this photo, or at least print it and stick it on the fridge. This is WAY better than any portrait studio family picture. I love it to pieces.
