Sunday Supper: Family Pizza Night

We have a favourite pizza joint. It's a little family-owned business that always has about 4 siblings or cousins working the front counter (with at least two of them glued to their phones, texting away). I'm not sure any of them are over the age of 15. In the back, their parents make the pies, with fresh ingredients and and home made sauce and dough. Not only is it delicious, it's cheap. And they have a two slice and pop deal for $4.20 (What? I'm the only the one that laughs when something is $4.20? Probably the only person over 30.....hmmm.).

Anyway, as great as the pizza is, it still doesn't compare to home made pizza. Unfortunately, I'm terrible with making home made crust. I blame it on our oven. So we usually use a store-bough flat bread, which isn't as good, but it's the toppings that really count. If a pizza recipe has "goat cheese" or "bacon" in the title, you can count this family in.

This weekend I spent some time browsing foodgawker.com before settling on two recipes - Roasted Cauliflower Pizza w/ Bechamel Sauce and Prosciutto and Pizza w/ Kale, Butternut Squash, Bacon & Smoked Mozzarella. Both recipes were fairly easy to make, but definitely not the kind of pizza you want to make on a weeknight when time is tight. Kale, as usual, was a great helper in the kitchen and I think, for the first time, realized that there he shares his name with a vegetable. Here is taking a close look:

Both pizza's were incredibly good and popular among all the family members, big and little. Of course, pizza always tastes better when you eat it sitting on the floor at a toddler sized table...

So - please share: what's your favourite topping? Have a recipe you want to share? What about a fool-proof pizza dough recipe??

  2. Fun! Yum! Our go-to pizza dough recipe is 1. go to Trader Joe's 2. buy bag of pizza dough 3. open/bake bag at home. I've tried to make homemade and same as you, never works out! Our favorite topping combo is basil and fresh tomatoes. We are boring. xo

  9. I use Jamie Oliver's pizza dough recipe, it's only gone wrong once out of 10 times i have made it, so almost fool proof :-) i have always used a pizza stone for getting the bases crispy !!! They always come out a treat, in fact some of my friends and family request pizza night at mine so they must be good !!

  10. I love making pizza! We are doing this every Friday for the rest of my life. My favorite toppings are mushrooms and green peppers, but I'm in the minority around here, so we have to vary it up. I get already made dough (not pre-cooked though) from our local grocery store and then just leave it out at room temp for a little while and it is very pliable.
