Revenge: Its On.

Remember yesterday when I posted a picture of Kale taking a poop on the side of the road during our trip to New York State? I'm sure most of you thought it was funny and cute, but I know at least one person out there thought, "dang lady, you are embarrassing that kid!" And as much as I'd like to reassure you that I will delete this blog before any potential love interests start googling him, I'm pretty sure that (1) kids nowadays know how to google by the time they're two, and (2) everyone who knows me knows that I'm too lazy to remember to actually do it.

I'm pretty sure Kale has figured this out too, since he's started to seek revenge.

A couple weeks ago I invited my supervisor, her husband, and two kids over for dinner. We are friendly, but at the end of the day - she's still my boss. I decided to be a bit proactive and warned her that Kale would likely take all his clothes off since it was a hot day. I was prepared. His nakedness and refusal to wear clothes were not going to embarrass me.

About five minutes after they got there, Kale held true to his character and stripped down to his birthday suit. NBD. Things were going well - the kids were having a good time, Kris didn't burn the dinner on the BBQ, and my boss and I were getting a chance to catch up (she's on maternity leave right now). Then something happened...

Half way through dinner, Kale asked "what this?" We all turned our heads and there he was - sitting naked in the middle of the kiddie table, one hand holding a piece of asparagus, the other pointing directly at his testicles, and again he asked "what this?"

Last night a neighbour came over with his twin four year old kids to gloat to Kris about Italy beating German at EuroCup (a sensitive topic at our house). We were in the backyard when they popped over and (obviously) Kale was naked. Whateves. I wasn't worried about that - I was having a mini celebration in my mind because I was wearing respectable lounge clothes, opposed to the flannel christmas shorts I usually sport after work.

We stood there chatting, the twins being their ever polite selves, while Kale tried to show them every single thing in the backyard. Truth be told, I think they were a little weirded out by the nakedness.

For a minute, I let my focus drift to the conversation and away from Kale. Which is pretty much the exact moment he came running at me with a panty liner saying "mama wear this! mama wear this!"

Its on, kid. It's on.

Oh hai! What's that? I won something?? IMPOSSIBLE! Oh wait. It's not the $50 Etsy giveaway that Sara at Saige Wisdom is currently hosting? It's a Terrible Blogger award for taking off on vacation, leaving my loyal readers with no posts? Hmph. Oh wait x 2. Those awards don't exist? I CAN'T WIN ANYTHING!!

So yeah - we went on vacation. Camping in New York with my blogging BFF Bianca from Not Your Average Ferris Wheel. And the only picture I took was this one of my son pooping on the side of the road in Napanee, ON. Parenting win, am I right?

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.....

The low-down: Use our themes, use your own themes - just tell us what you're "currently" up to! This week our themes are: remembering, learning, wishing for, considering, and cooking. If you'd like to let us know what someone else is currently up to - your child, your partner, your grandma - we like that too!

Please remember to add your link at the bottom so we can find you, and copy and paste the button code into your post so others can find us and link up too! Also be sure to visit the other participants and say hello - especially my lovely co-host Wendy at This Amazing Day!

Remembering a slug that we found living under his chin. While camping in the cold and wet land known as Lowville, NY, we became pretty tight with spiders and slugs. Kale, the lucky kid that is, inherited my round face which has resulted in about 14 chins (down from 32 when he was a baby). So it came as no surprise when we found that a slug had taken up residence somewhere between chin 8 and 11. Kale thought this was awesome and has been telling everyone about the slug on his chin, even insisting that it's still cozied up in there.

Learning that not everything is his. I mean, I think he's learning this. I tell him this at least 40 times in 40 minutes. But considering the pitch he hits when he screams "MINE! NO BUBBIE! IT'S MINE!" when the cat isn't even on the same FLOOR of the house, I'm not entirely convinced he gets it.

Wishing for us to visit all the trolls that live under bridges. When we were crossing the border into the US, we told Kale that there was a toll bridge. He immediately translated this into Dora-speak and almost lost his mind when he thought we were going to see a TROLL BRIDGE. The rest of the weekend he would say, "maybe we go see troll bridge?"

Considering maybe everything? Kale has become obsessed with the word "maybe." He starts every sentence with "maybe." Maybe I go to the bathroom? Maybe that's a chair? Maybe I see troll bridge? Maybe I roast marshmallow? Maybe you're the cutest kid EVER!

Cooking marshmallows over the fire. It's probably not a good idea to have a toddler stand so close to an open fire pit, but convincing Kale of that was next to impossible. Besides, he's a pretty decent marshmallow roaster and he doesn't even want to eat them. He just roasts and feeds them to me. Is there anything better than a personal marshmallow roaster??

Remembering why I love camping so much. Seriously - it rained on us for four days and we froze our butts off, but I still LOVED our trip. With no wi-fi (and some serious roaming charges), there was no connection to work, and something about being in the woods helps you let it all go. It was a refreshing break from the stress and fast-paced work environment I deal with. Also, you don't have to shower and you're allowed to eat all the snacks in the world without feeling guilty.

Learning how friendships built through blogging are supposed to look in real life. I had a bad experience one of the first times I tried to make a blogging friendship happen in "real life." I was super disappointed and hurt by the experience and it made me a bit weary about meeting bloggers IRL. However, I have to say that, thanks to Meg, Lisa, and Bianca, I'm learning that friendships can be taken offline and be amazing.

Wishing for comfortable temperatures to sleep in. After three nights sleeping in a cold, wet tent with champion snorers, I was wishing pretty hard for a night in my bed. However, we arrived home to warm temperatures and our bedroom, which is in the attic, was like a sauna. Instead of waiting for the a/c to cool it down, I stumbled onto the couch downstairs and cracked a window, wich let in the cold air as the temperatures dropped overnight. Have I mentioned how much of a mom-onster I am without sleep??

Considering an American road trip this summer. My family travelled through the US a lot when I was young, but I don't remember much of it (except Graceland - that's just something you don't forget). After driving through New York State on our way home, Kris and I started talking about doing a bit of a road trip through the US in late August. I mean, all you American bloggers would let us crash on your couches, no?

Cooking s'mores. I mean, with a personal marshmallow roaster at my fingertips, am I really supposed to make anything else??

Next week's themes: Inspired by, Devouring, Thankful for, Watching, Starting

Obsessions link-up

In the 7th grade I won a stuffed owl when my name was drawn from all the kids that participated in pizza day over the course of the year. I'm pretty sure that's the only time I've won a giveaway. I could be wrong, considering I have the world's worst memory. In fact, I'm not even sure it was an owl - it may have been an ostrich.

I mean, I understand that I don't win things because I never enter giveaways. Like, ever. I'm that woman that refuses to give her email address to the cashier at the Gap even though there is a chance I could win a $10,000 shopping spree. The logic on this one is sparse, so I won't even try to explain. I tend not to enter blog giveaways either - mostly because I run with a small-time blogger crew that don't tend to do giveaways. Also, most giveaways hate Canadians. At least that's what their shipping practices say in the small print.

So I must be pretty excited that one of my blogger buddies who happens to be CANADIAN, is doing a giveaway - right? You bet. So excited that I'm actually going to enter.

Here's the deal: Sara over at Saige Wisdom told me to blog about things I'm obsessed with, including something under $50 on Etsy and if I win - she'll buy it for me. I'm sure Sara is going to do some kind of boring random selection to pick the winner, but I'd like to remind her that all I've ever won in life is a stuffed owl. Or an ostrich. Either way, it's lame.

I'm seeing this giveaway as an opportunity to introduce a little tangerine to my living room. Ever since I talked about these pillows in my last obsession link-up, I've been obsessed with finding the perfect pillows for a reasonable price. Some people suggested I make my own to which I tell them - that is beyond my crafting ability. Way beyond. So when I spotted these on Etsy, I was all "these are the ones I'm going to win on Sara's giveaway!"

Sew Gracious, $32USD
And you know what happens once you look at one thing on Etsy, right? You need to look at all the things! So here are four other tangerine obsessions I discovered while wasting making good use of my limited free time:

Tangerine Bicycle Child Quilt for my little cycling enthusiast:
EggMoney Quilts, $205CAD
I love this pillow so much, but at $116, I'm going to have to wait until I win the lottery. Which is tricky considering I've never bought a lottery ticket in my life.
ElkhornDesign, $116CAD
I'm pretty sure all our mugs were purchased during my first year of university as part of one of those "kitchens in a box" from Canadian Tire. It probably wouldn't hurt to have something slightly cooler (and less stained??).

BreadandBadger, $75.94CAD
I don't have an ipad, but I want an ipad. So clearly I need a cover for my non-existant ipad:

Introduction, $22CAD
Ok, so now all you lovely blogging people need to get on board and join the link-up for your chance to win $50 for Etsy!

Kale is welcoming you all in Portuguese this week because EuroCup2012 still has a hold on my television and I cheer for the team with the best looking players (Portugal, obvi.).

If this post doesn't make sense, we're going to blame the heat, ok? Today was 40C with the humidex (that's a 104F for the Americans) and I'm pretty sure my internal temperature is about 108. Celsius. I came home and ran through Kale's sprinkler with my work clothes on. So obviously I'm drinking cold beer to cool down.

The low-down: Use our themes, use your own themes - just tell us what you're "currently" up to! This week our themes are: making, listening to, craving, writing, and laughing at. If you'd like to let us know what someone else is currently up to - your child, your partner, your grandma - we like that too!

Making me crazy. No, really, it's like he doesn't feel the heat despite the enormous amount of sweat dripping off him. He's all 'hold me, nurse me, sleep cuddled up to me.' Dude - you're hot, I'm hot, let's keep some distance between our hot, sticky skin.

Listening to his teachers and only his teachers. This morning I went to Kale's class so the kids could help me with an end of year gift for his teachers. The Director came with me and we kicked the teachers out for a few minutes. All of the kids were wearing inflatable rings around their waists that their teachers had given them as an end of year gift. The Director asked the kids to take them off while we worked on a project and they all obliged, except Kale. I suggested he follow their lead, but he refused. I did the silent eye beg. I whispered a bribe in his ear. Nothing. Then the Director said "oh Kale, why don't you take your ring off?" and he was all, "THAT'S THE BEST IDEA EVER!!"

Craving 'ola bars. Not the healthy kind either. The chocolate covered cheap ones that Kris eats everyday with his lunch. Remember when we were all new moms and we said we wouldn't ever feed our kids processed junk? Hah!

Writing imaginary notes. We're 99% sure Kale is left handed since he holds a pen with his left hand like a pro. Where do they learn this stuff??? Kale will write a note on every scrap piece of paper, receipt, or bill he can find.

Laughing at the sprinkler. He thinks it's pretty hilarious.

Making a special end of year gift for Kale's teachers. Since I'm not crafty at all, I had to cruise pinterest and etsy for some simple inspiration. It only took me 900 hours to replicate something that would take a normal person 10 minutes. I'm going to share it next week for my Montessori Monday post.

Listening to CBC radio (duh). It's all I listen to (I mean, the odd time I listen to Kris talking to me - but mostly it's just the CBC). Tonight I said to Kris, "you know that "call me maybe" song? I see people tweet about and see it mentioned online and stuff and how it's played all the time - but I've never even HEARD it." I hear the girl that sings it is Canadian, which means the CBC can play it because it's Canadian content - I guess we're just not the right crowd.

Craving cold beer. Iced Americano's. Popsicles. Frozen yogurt.

Writing blog posts. Recaps of rental market reports. Meeting minutes (shoot me). Lists for camping this weekend. Thank you notes to Kale's teachers (waaaahhh).

Laughing at Kale running through the sprinkler. I mean, what's more funny than a naked two year old dashing through a sprinkler wearing an inflatable ring shaped like a turtle around his waist (photos to come).

2 years of attachment parenting: Principle 2 {feed with love and respect}

As a way to reflect on our parenting over the past two years, I’ve decided to write a series of posts based on Attachment Parenting International’s 8Principles of Attachment Parenting. I did something similar last year when Kale turned one, except I used Dr.Sears’ 7 Baby B’s. You can read those posts here.

If you’re new to attachment parenting, I strongly recommend reading this quick introduction by API. Here is a quote from this introduction that I love and wanted to share:

“Attachment Parenting is not a one-size-fits-all recipe for raising children, therefore API recommends parents use their own judgment and intuition to create a parenting style that fosters attachment and works for their family. Some practices listed in The Eight Principles are inherently more attachment-promoting than others. The most ideal practices are listed first. Many API support groups start each meeting by saying "Take what works for your family and leave the rest." This sentiment also applies to The Eight Principles.”

My original goal was to nurse Kale until he turned one, but as I became more informed about the benefits of breastfeeding, I quickly upped that to two. Like most expectant new mother's, I assumed that breastfeeding would come natural, and I was shaken during those first few months when we struggled with an assertive let-down and oversupply. One of my most exasperated moments as a mother was admitting that I hated breastfeeding. Luckily, I had incredibly supportive midwives and a wonderful lactation consultant, along with a supportive network of family and friends. After about four months, I'd adjusted to nursing lying down and Kale had adjusted to be drowned with milk (somewhat) and soon enough, I came to love nursing my son.

Nursing a toddler is obviously very different from nursing an infant. For one, toddlers never stop moving - including when they're latched on to your nipple! Toddlers are also more vocal - they can ask to be nursed. For some reason that I'll never understand, the fact that a toddler can ask for breast milk seems to bother a lot of people. It's a good thing that it doesn't bother me, since Kale isn't shy about asking or making announcements about my breasts as if they are his most favourite possession (for example, I picked him up from school one day in a tank top and he saw me and shouted "Mama at school! Mama's ba-boo's at school too!" and ran to hug my breasts).

I rarely nurse Kale in public anymore. Mostly because he only nurses in the morning and before bed. The city I live in is very breastfeeding friendly, and so it's not uncommon to see a mother nursing in public (toddler's included!). I realize how lucky we are to live here, since I know other communities are not as supportive.

On Kale's second birthday, I nursed him in the rocking chair that I've logged so many nursing hours in, and realized that I'd met my goal. Two years. To say I'm proud of this is an understatement. But in our case, the goal is not the end. I'm happy to continue nursing Kale until he's ready to stop and to make weaning as natural as possible. This doesn't mean I don't say no, or put limits on nursing, or gently suggest that the end is near, but rather that I want weaning to work for both of us at a time when we both feel ready. I'm sure that when I write this series in another year, it'll be about our weaning story, but I'm open to whatever path we take.

In addition to breastfeeding, I wanted to say a little bit about baby-led weaning. Kale is a very good eater - he eats a lot and enjoys diversity. His teachers and other parents often comment on what an amazing eater he is. Obviously I haven't run any scientific studies and have nothing to compare it to since he's our only kid, but I do believe his great eating is the result of baby-led weaning. We've never given him purees or cooked him a separate meal. Eating the same as us is normal for him and he does so without question. Everything that baby-led weaning advocates said would come true - did. I couldn't recommend it more.

We hope you're enjoying this series! If so, we'd love a vote - just click the banner and then the owl on the left!

Montessori Materials

It's hard to believe, but this is the last week of school for Kale. He'll be going to a summer camp at his current school for eight weeks from mid-June to mid-August, but it is less Montessori focused and more play-based (which is great - the summer should be all about play!).

In September he'll start at a new Montessori school in Casa 1 - a couple months shy of the preferred start age (similar to how he started this school year). We convinced the Director of the school to let him start Casa 1 based on the facts that he's (1) toilet trained, and (2) has a year of Montessori under his belt. I think he's going to be fine in Casa 1, especially since some of the kids from his current class will be there. However, I know it's important for us to stick to our Montessori activities at home over the summer so we don't hand over a wild child in September.

This got me thinking about Montessori materials - the one's we have and can easily find at a toy store, the staples we can find just about anywhere, and the materials we want, but have to purchase from a specialty store. So, I thought I'd share!

I'm not sure if it's because wooden toys are becoming more popular, Montessori is becoming more popular, or if people are just more interested in purchasing educational toys for their little ones, but there seems to be montessori-inspired toys everywhere you look these days! Here are a few we have or would like to have that can be found out toy stores:

1. Plan Toys Beehive / 2. Boikido Seasons Puzzle / 3. Boikido Stacking Game / 4. Plan Toys Sorting Board

One of the really great things about Montessori and montessori-inspired activities is that they don't require you spend a lot of money on materials. In fact, many of the items we use at home are typical household items. Here are a few staples we use regularly:

1. wooden tray / 2. wooden bowl / 3. stainless steel measuring cups / 4. natural sponge / 5. wooden tongs

Finally, there are some Montessori materials that we would love to have at home, but they are only available through specialty stores (at least around here), which means they're pretty expensive. If you're crafty, you can do a little DIY and replicate them - but I am pretty much the opposite of crafty. Here are some we have our eyes on:

1. Buttoning Frame / 2. Pink Tower / 3. Colour Tablets (2nd box) / 4. Cylinder Block (part 1) / 5. Sandpaper Numbers

What materials are essential at your house? Where do you buy most of your things? Are you crafty and have a great tutorial to share?? I need all the help I can get!

Montessori Monday

happy uppa's day.

When I was pregnant I developed a super nose and it has stuck with me since. The worst is peanut butter. Kris likes to have a spoonful of peanut butter as a snack before bed. I swear I can smell the jar opening two floors away. And then he crawls into bed and it's like I'm being choked by the smell and I can barely breath long enough to insist he go brush his teeth.

Even though my super nose is partly to blame, it is something that Kris does that drives me insane. After seven (or is it eight) years together, there are lots of little things like this that push my buttons. However, there is one part of Kris that can do no wrong -

That's the part of being Kale's dad (or as we call him around here "uppa.").

Kris has embraced parenting with his whole being and he's become a better person because of it. Here's a few things that Kris has done that prove he should be crowned "uppa of the year:"

  • He continues to bedshare with Kale and respond to all his nighttime needs while I catch my zzzz's upstairs. Not only does Kris not complain about this, but he often excitedly tells me about all the cute things Kale did in the night ("He woke me up and told me he had to pee and I told him he could just go because he was wearing a diaper and he was all 'no uppa, Kale pee in toilet' and I was like, 'you're right, buddy, let's go.' Isn't that awesome?!").
  • 9 times out of 10 he will pass on time by himself or with his friends to hang out with Kale. Sometimes I will suggest he do something on his own and he looks at me with genuine confusion and says "but then I wouldn't be able to hang out with Kale."
  • He will do whatever Kale wants to do, regardless of how he's feeling. Kale wants to go on a bike ride? Away they go! Kale wants to go swimming? Grab your suit! Kale wants to go to the park? Jump in the wagon!
  • Kris doesn't bat an eye when Kale comes out with toe nail polish, or grabs his purse and baby and tells us he's going shopping at the mall. He supports his choices and ignores gender stereotypes.
  • Kris has unlimited patience. Yesterday afternoon Kris and Kale were in the backyard sorting through camping stuff I could hear Kale ask, "Uppa, what this? Uppa, what that? What this, uppa?" OVER.AND OVER.AND OVER. Kris answered he him every time, with the same amount of patience.
There are lots of things that Kale does that reminds me of Kris. They both have endless amounts of energy. They both love kicking around a soccer ball and taking bike rides. They both like people and talking to strangers. They both snore. They both love me.

And, of course, there's this:

Happy uppa's day.

baking fail.

The cafe next to my office offers something called a "healthy cookie." I'm pretty sure there is nothing healthy about them, but they put them next to the "coffee toffee chocolate brownies" and so I always feel better about myself when I take the cookie. I mean, there are cherries in the cookie. That's like half a fruit serving, right?

The "healthy cookie" at the cafe inspired me to find a recipe for my mini cookie monster. Yeah, you'd think sharing a name with a vegetable would eliminate any chance of growing a sweet tooth, but I'm pretty sure every tooth Kale has is a sweet one.

So...I did what every mom does when they want a recipe. I looked on pinterest. Which led me to here - Bakerella's Heathy Cookies. And then Kale and I made the cookies and the entire time I was thinking "what is so %&%$ healthy about these cookies?!" I even made this titled picture for this post:

Then I looked up the link again to post here and that's when I realized - it says HEATHY cookies, NOT HEALTHY.

#momfail #bakingfail #lifefail

The cookies were really, really good. I just wish I'd known they weren't "healthy" before I ate an entire dozen for dessert.....

currently link up {v.3}

Kale is saying hello in German this week. Our house has been taken over by EuroCup2012.
I'm really happy to co-host our third 'currently' link-up with Wendy from This Amazing Day! We couldn't be happier with the number of people that have been participating and are having a great time reading all your posts.

Kale is currently....

Working on a special father's day craft at school. It's a surprise so I'll you know on Sunday what it is. I'm hoping Kris takes better care of it than I did the potted plant Kale made for Mother's Day (#momfail).

Dreaming of the cat. Cutting trees. Watching "moo-bies" (movies). We know what is Kale is dreaming of because he talks about it all night in his sleep.

Planning a trip on a boat. The last time Kale was on a boat he was probably three months old. He doesn't have any books about boats. We don't watch any shows about boats. I really don't think he knows what a boat is. Yet he often tells me he is going for a trip on his boat. Guess what kiddo? Our city is landlocked. Good luck.

Thinking about our neighbour's tree that fell during a storm and was later cut down completely by some city workers. He talks about it at least 26 times a day and every time he tells us the story, he's just as excited as the first time he told it. His memory astounds me.

Obsessed with lawnmowers. Every time he hears one we he MUST find it and screams "CUTTING GRASS! CUTTING GRASS! CUTTING GRASS!" until we do. I bet people without two years old obsessed with lawnmowers barely even notice the sound when a neighbour is out there giving their green a trim. Let me tell you - people are cutting their grass more often than you might think.....

Randalin is currently....

Working on my new blog series 'Two Years of Attachment Parenting." I finally wrote my first post this week and have seven more planned. Don't be surprised if Kale is 8 by the time I'm finished.

Dreaming of the day I don't have to drive across town four times a day to drop off and pick up Kale. School is done in a week and then he has 8 weeks of summer camp (at his school). In September he'll be starting a new school that is a block from our house and close to my office. I have been doing this driving back and forth thing since September and as much as I love seeing Kale at lunch, I am SO OVER the driving.

Planning our camping trip next weekend with Bianca, Keith & Cole from Not Your Average Ferris Wheel! Bianca and I have been best blog buddies for two years and Cole and Kale are BFF's that just don't know it yet (same goes for Keith and Kris!). We are super excited to spend a few days with them camping in New York - our first time camping in a different country!!

Thinking about my summer vacation in August. I have two weeks off and Kris will have one of those weeks off so we're planning to do some camping. The other week Kale and I can do whatever our hearts desire. What would you do with an entire week off with  your two year old? We need ideas!

Obsessed with Mad Men! I know, you're tired of me talking about it. Don't worry - last night was the season finale and so I'll say no more until next season. But what now?! I NEED A SHOW!! Suggestions?!? My preference is something with a few seasons already completed so I can obsessively watch episode after episode. Before Mad Men, I did Downton Abbey, so I'm kind of on a period piece kick. I don't do sci-fi or reality, and I'm more of a HBO girl than a ABC/NBC/CBS one. Annnnnnd.....GO!

Next weeks themes:

VLOGGED: what's in your closet?

As much as I enjoy watching other people's vlog's, I had pretty much committed to NEVER doing one. Mostly because I had to make a video for work once to send to a conference I couldn't make and it took me 18 hours and 458 takes before I snapped and said "THIS WILL DO" and sent the world's worst 3 minute video off to Texas so a bunch of strangers could snicker at me. WORST.

But then my IRL friend Emily from Hope Squared announced that she was co-hosting a vlog link up and I felt pressured inspired to participate. Luckily I have a cute kid to distract from my Canadian accent and end-of-day hair and make up.

The theme of the vlog is 'what's in your closet.' Unfortunately, the answer to that is clothes. Boring, right? Well, like I said, my video features a cute kid. That should get me extra points, right? Wait - this is a contest, isn't it?

Don't be shy! Make a vlog and link up!
